Context
The right to health promise is an aspiration shared by citizens, their governments, and civil society organizations. But there is a lack of clarity about how this promise actually delivers in diverse circumstances faced by ordinary people. Without an adequate way to evaluate and measure the way various countries do (or do not) deliver on the promise of a right to health, accountability and engagement remain at a standstill.
The Idea
Create a diagnostic tool to determine how each country is delivering on the promise of right to health to its citizens, using common people in everyday circumstances to gauge how this right is experienced.
About the Project
This project will involve performing an audit on countries that currently have a right to health, and developing an index that accurately reflects how everyday citizens experience, utilize, or exercise that right. While delivering on the promise of this right—and indeed, any right—is an always-evolving process for any government or entity, we believe that it necessarily starts with a clear assessment of the current state of care in each country. After determining this, we will then use this index to identify strengths and weaknesses of each country’s healthcare ecosystem, guide policy and program development based on what can be strengthened, and otherwise improve the attainability of the right to health for all people.
