Context
Again and again around the world, we see that access to care isn’t the only metric that matters when it comes to securing global health—access alone can not bring about improved health if it doesn’t take into consideration a standard of care. In low- and middle-income countries, programs that expand access to services without ensuring a minimum standard of care can prove ineffective and unaccountable to the communities they are meant to serve.
The Idea
Perform an audit of low- and middle-income countries to assess the current level (and distribution) of high-quality pediatric emergency care that is accessible to various communities, using existing USAID data.
About the Project
This project aims to increase the quality of available care in three stages. First, it will identify core services that countries must have to meet a standard of care. Second, it will provide a roadmap for improvement of care to countries that have an obligation to support the health of their citizens. Finally, it will leverage transparency to hold legal and social organizations responsible for meeting those obligations. To improve quality, it’s essential to have accountability mechanisms that help drive and sustain improvement. This project offers an opportunity to build tools that can serve as a catalyst for change, and a transparent, active way to help implement that change.
